This Month in History - May

Source
Seeing as I'm a big of a history nerd, I've decided to try and incorporate it into my blog a bit more but in a non-boring way. At the end of each month there will now be a post to round up anniversaries of events from throughout that month. It's a good and easy way to make you think about the past. This month we have the Loch Ness monster,  Shrek, blue jeans and the Sex Pistols.

  1. 2nd - Loch Ness monster sighted 1933
  2. 5th - First American in space 1961 - YOU GO ALAN B SHEPARD but Yuri Gagarin did it first a month earlier.
  3. 7th - Sinking of the Lusitania in 1915 in the German blockade of British trade, killing thousands of civilians
  4. 8th - Victory in Europe (VE) day, celebrating 70 years since the Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of Germany
  5. 17th - Brown v Board of education 1954 (Brown v Topeka) was a crucial moment in the African American Civil Rights movement, declaring that segregation in public schools violated the 14th Amendment.
  6. 18th - Shrek released in 2001. This is just to make you feel old - Shrek came out 14 years ago guys.

  7. 20th - Levi Strauss & Jacob Davis receive patent for blue jeans 1873. They are the reason you wear blue jeans. Who said history was boring?
  8. 30th Joan of Arc martyred.
  9. 31st BBC bans the Sex pistols' 'God save the queen' in 1977. Some people saw it as treasonous and wanted them to be hanged but it reached no. 2 in the charts so the majority of the country obviously liked it. I know I do.
  10. 31st Big Ben goes into operation in 1859.

What do you think of this sort of post? Do you think it's a good idea?

Yellow Floral Skirt

Topshop Jumper // H&M Skirt // Doc Martens Shoes

If you're going to wear colour you might as well go full whack and wear yellow, right? I got this skirt not long ago from H&M and it's super cute and summery and super cheap. I just paired it with my Topshop jumper which I wear with almost everything. I feel this is going to be one of my go to summer outfits, as it's so light and an easy way to avoid the all black outfits.

What are your favourite summer outfits?

Why I love My Uni Room & Home Wishlist

I wrote a post back in September when I first moved into my student accommodation and 8 months on it only seems right to share with you all the reasons why I loved it.

Having no living room means that I spend all my time in my bedroom. This is where I sleep, study (ha) , watch TV and eat so it has to be pretty darn cosy for me to not go insane.  That also means this room is pretty special. It's where I've spent most of my first year of uni. It's where I was sat when I found out all of my coursework grades, where I sat to write all of those horrific essays and, of course, where I sat to watch every episode of the IT Crowd in avoidance of all the work I had to do. Being a messy person, my bed is rarely ever made but that made it so much easier to come home from uni and just crawl back in.

As for the actual decor of my room, it's a bit of a mish mash between simple, minimalist styles with bits of random stuff that I like (I'm looking at you, Kitchener). If you follow me on pinterest you know the sort of styles I like; a lot of white sheets and black, grey and copper accessories dotted around the room, not to mention numerous (I have 11) cacti.  Cushions are a must for staying comfy, especially if you do all of your sitting around in bed.

1/2/3/4/5/6
I thought I'd throw in a wishlist to share the sort of things that I like and make the perfect room. It's also sort of a list of things I want for when I leave my current house and into my new one. I'm hoping for crisp white sheets, like those at Parachute Home, super soft blankets and loads of candles seeing as I can burn them in my new house. If you haven't heard of Parachute and you really like the minimal, classic sort of style, you should really check them out as they have a range of beautiful products that would go perfectly well with the marble look H&M cushion and copper basket from Hema. Hopefully I will love my new room as much as my current one.

What do you think makes a perfect room? What do you love about your room?

Summer Ball/Prom Make Up On a Budget

Ah, it's that time of year again where students across the country get all glammed up to celebrate the end of their academic year. This might be your year 11 prom, year 13 leavers' do or, as it is for me, the annual university summer ball which sounds way to classy for me to be attending. Seeing as these events seem to crop up every year, it can get a bit pricey to go all out every time or even at all if you're on a tight budget. I've always refused to spend a lot on these events because I don't have the budget to and quite frankly, I don't want to spend loads of money just for one day, I'd much rather do my hair and make up myself so I thought I'd show you what I used to create my look for the summer ball using just your average drug store make up.

Firstly I used the Seventeen Flawless Primer (£5.99) to ensure a smooth and even base. On top of this I applied the Rimmel Stay Matte Foundation (Light Porcelain £5.99) which, to say it's dirt cheap, it's surprisingly really good at giving a flawlessly matte finish. I keep it in place with the Collection Pressed powder (Ivory 18 £1.99). Of course contouring is a must for a glam look. My favourite contour kit is the one by Sleek but, as you can see, I'm running out of the highlighter so I switched it for the MUA undress your skin highlighter instead. This has a bit of a pink tinge to it so there's not really any need for blusher. When it comes to the eyes, I decided to stay away from the grey colours I tend to opt for and used browns instead. I used the Maybelline 24 hour tattoo eyeshadow (permanent taupe £4.99) as a base colour, which I'm pretty sure is a budget holy grail amongst the blogging world. I simply darkened the outer edges of the eye with the shade obsessed from the MUA undress me too palette. Of course I completed the look with winged eyeliner (Maybelline Master Graphic Felt Tip Liner £5.99), a flick of mascara (Collection No Clumps £2.99) and a red lip (Collection - Queen of Hearts similar here).

And there you have it - a simple and budget friendly look that's perfect for your summer ball!

Since being at uni it has become way too easy for me just to shove anything on in the morning so I can get an extra ten minutes sleep but because of this, I feel like I'm stuck in a bit of a style rut. What better way to get out of the rut than an inspiration post? I'm currently feeling minimal styles and a little bit of seventies - two things I never would have thought I'd like.

What summer trends are you loving?

Camel & Grey

Jumper - Primark (similar) // Circle Skirt - American Apparel // Shoes - Pull & Bear

As always I'm a million years late in jumping on the band wagon but hey, I got an AA circle skirt and it's corduroy AND  camel coloured. I really like the way camel and grey go together. They may not be very summery colours but they definitely give a nod to the colours of the seventies trend that's knocking about this summer, which is good for me because I don't think I'm the sort of blogger to whack on a pair of flairs. As for these shoes - oh these beautiful shoes - I managed to find these in the pull and bear sale. They remind me of clumpy doc martens and, let me tell you, they hurt your feet twice as much, which I didn't think was possible. With a lot of painful wearing in they will be my favourite shoes.

Summer Scents

Now that sun is finally shining it felt right to adopt a new summer scent, something a bit lighter and fresher than the warming winter smells I tend to stick to. I will, as always, be continuing to wear my Marc Jacobs 'Dot' as that's one of my favourites all year round but here are two that I have pruchased especially for those super summery days.

Flora Exotica Eau de toilette - Primark £2
I've never really considered Primark as a place where I'd buy perfume but I was sucked in by the seriously summery packaging. I had a sniff and was immediately hooked. It quite fruity as it contains mangosteen fruit but at the same time it's very florally because of the crushed jasmine. It's a very exotic sort of smell so perfect for those hot summer days and it's rollerball applicator makes it easy to keep reapplying throughout the day.

Coconut Body Mist - The Body Shop £7.50
For me, coconut is the ultimate summer smell because it always reminds me of the smell of suncream. I always find it hard to find a coconut body mist, it's easy to find moisturisers and soap but sprays are much more rare. It's a very light and fresh scent and will definitely be my go to throughout the summer and every summer to come.

What are your favourite scents for summer?

Drugstore Haul: Haircare, Skincare & Make Up

Maybelline Master Graphic Felt Tip Eyeliner // MUA - Undress Your Skin Highlighter // Collection No More Clumps Mascara // L'Oreal Infallible 24hr matte foundation // Herbal Essences Beautiful Ends Hair Mask // Dove Pure Care Dry Hair Oil // Coconut Oil // Nivea Sensitive 3 in 1 Micellar Cleansing Water // Botanics Mattifying Day Cream SPF 15

On a recent shopping trip I needed to 'pop' into Boots and Superdrug to get a few bits and pieces and came out with stuff I probably don't need. What can I say? I'm a sucker for offers.

Make Up: Firstly, I was in desperate need of new eyeliner, foundation and mascara as I was running out of my current ones. The Maybelline eyeliner was an instant re-purchase as I was really pleased with it the last time I used it as it's angled tip makes it so much easier to do winged eyeliner. To say I've been practising for about 5 years, I am still no good. I then felt the need to purchase the Collection Fast Stroke liquid liner because I've heard so many good things about it but I'm not sure I'm going to get on with this sort of brush. Another collection item was the mascara. To say it's cheap, I'm never left disappointed. Since my foundation was running low, I opted for the mattifying version of the Infallible foundation as I've noticed my skin getting more oily but I'm yet to come to a verdict on this yet. Finally do you know how hard it is to find a powder highlighter under £10? It's impossible. However I stumbled upon this MUA gem and for £3 you can't go wrong.

Haircare: Another repurchase was the Herbal Essences beautiful ends hair mask which I absolutely adored the last time I purchased it. It's great for dry and split ends and nourishing those long locks. The Doe dry oil was a bit of a whim because it was on offer, I'm yet to give this a go but I've heard great things.

Skincare: I have been on the hunt for an affordable coconut oil for a while and I somehow can't seem to justify spending £6 on a jar from the supermarket. You can imagine my happiness when I found this gem for £2 in superdrug. There are so many ways that you can use it. It's guaranteed to help your skin and hair especially. I feel like everyone and their nan has raved about the micellar water so I thought I would jump on the bandwagon and give it a go! As I mentioned before, my skin seems to be a bit more oily than usual so I purchased for a mattifying day cream in the hope to smooth everything out!

There you have it! What have you been purchasing recently?
